Ranters Rest B&B

Ranters Rest B&B

Ranter’s Rest is situated in the heart of the Brede Valley, 6 minutes to Rye & Winchelsea. The valley is an AONB & very beautiful at all times of the year.

It is with great sadness that I’m closing Ranters Rest as a B&B. Due to my having cancer & the treatment that I have to undergo there is no way to manage it.
I shall miss my lovely guests & very much look forward to seeing lots of you again. To all the friends who have sent such sweet messages I send huge thanks. The kindness of friends makes it much easier to accept the difficulties.
However, I’m determined this should not be the end & already have several estimates coming in to convert the B&B end of the house into a luxury holiday let appartment. All being well, both for me & the building, we hope to be ready to welcome guests by April. My daughter, Naomi, is living here & taking very good care of me & is looking forward to welcoming guests when the conversion is done. We plan to have a flexible bedroom (kingsize or 2 twin beds plus cot & child’s bed available) & a sitting room (with sofa bed) with built in kitchen. This should make it very comfortable for families or 2 couples. Of course everything will be done to the same high standards & the appartment will be let for a minimum of 3 days or much longer. When the work is done we will put up lots of photos.

We think that our home in the valley will be a delightful base for walkers, gardeners, birdwatchers & nature lovers. With the sea close by & many places to visit, it will also be ideal for families & we will be happy to babysit.
So, come spring, if anyone is in need of the restorative powers of a calm beautiful place, this is surely one to consider.Both our rooms have extensive views and the house is a haven of peace. Guests are also welcome to enjoy the garden looking out over this lovely valley. There are plenty of corners to watch the sunset & perhaps enjoy a bottle of wine & a picnic
amp;
This is, in general, great country for walkers, and it is easy to walk from the house in several directions. We have leaflets here giving details of local walks, & we are close to the High Weald which is a unique part of the country & well worth exploring. Their website is very interesting & informative: high weald AONB.org. We are also near the South downs….Beachy head, the Seven Sisters & the lovely Cuckmere valley are all an easy drive away. In the other direction is Romney Marsh, another unique habitat and home to many small & fascinating medieval churches.

Our garden & the valley

Our garden & the valley

For birdwatchers, we are very close to Rye Harbour nature reserve which attracts migrant birds as well as the usual suspects. There are avocets & bitterns & a protected area for the little terns. Both the valley & the garden are also home to many birds. Winchelsea beach is very near, very unspoilt & the sunsets over the beach are magnificent There is also the reserve at Dungeness as well as its huge shingle beach & Derek Jarman’s cottage & garden.

For garden lovers we are close to Great Dixter, Sissinghurst & several other wonderful gardens, & we are always ready to talk about plants! I have a fairly extensive library of gardening books & books about gardens which guests are welcome to enjoy.

We really enjoy meeting new people and will do everything possible to make our guests feel both at home & on holiday! Babies are always welcome & we love having children around.
